Gentle to the skin, smooth spring water
On the first floor of Matsusaki Main Wing “Zuiun,” facing the Azuchi-Momoyama Garden is a large, gender-separated bathhouse. From the top floor (5F) of the New Wing “Hōoh,” overlooking the gardens, there are three outdoor baths (Mokusei, Gyokuryu and Raicho) offering generous views of “Hakusan” and the Ryōhaku Mountains. The natural hot spring waters of Kaga Onsen (including Yamashiro, Yamanaka, Katayamazu and Awazu Onsens) and Wakura Onsen are exceptional for their slight alkalai content, which is always smooth-feeling and gentle on the skin even after prolonged exposure.
About the Hot Spring
The hot spring used in Matsusaki comes from right under the present-day garden. The maximum daily discharge is 300,000 liters. Because the spring is slightly under normal bathing temperature at 36.5°C, we use a circulation warmer. The waters we use are of course 100% natural spring, which are replenished in constant flow. In addition, in the large public baths (both mens and womens) there are smooth baths of the natural source temperature 36.5°C. In all of the open-air, indoor, private room and large public baths this hot spring water is used.

“Mokusei”
The all-cypress outdoor bath has a good, carefree feeling. There is the main bath, mist sauna, and a place built for reclining in the outdoor bath. From the outdoor bath one can expect to see the sacred mountain Hakusan, the grounds of Matsusaki, and in winter perhaps the rustic sights of the white heron nesting in the garden. Typically the afternoons and evenings are dedicated to ladies’ enjoyment, while the mornings are reserved for the gentlemen.

“Gyokuryu”
This is an outdoor bath flowing over the rocks with a deep bow to the purity of nature. There is a main bath, sauna, and a place for reclining in the outdoor bath. From the outdoor bath one can expect to see the sacred mountain Hakusan, the grounds of Matsusaki, and in winter perhaps the rustic sights of the white heron nesting in the garden. Afternoons and evenings are for the gentlemen, while mornings are for ladies, usually.

You can request a reservation of the Raicho private family bath anytime--when you first make your room reservation or after, when you check-in, during your stay or even at the last minute (depends on availability).

Connected at the source of a 36.5°C hot spring
We use only 100% natural sping water in our baths. The source flows at 36.5°C, which is a bit tepid, so we heat it a few degrees. Only the cypress main bath receives the hot spring water at the lower temperature--please by all means feel free to alternate between the hotter baths and the cooler waters of the cypress main bath, which is a common way to help relieve a stiff neck or lower back pain and improve general blood circulation.
For guests who may not wish to bathe au naturel, there are wrap cloths available in each dressing room. Please feel free to wear them while you bathe.
